Throughout the interactive orals, my understanding of cultural and contextual consideration of Antigone by Sophocles has developed. You must receive further information about the playwright, the role of women, and the symbols used in Antigone to have a full understanding of the play. Without the knowledge provided from the interactive orals, the play would not have been understood as well as it is now. To understand the importance and meaning of Antigone, you must understand the playwright and his purpose of writing the play. In his play, Sophocles illustrates the rival claims of the state and the individual conscience. He does so by using the dramatic story of a young woman, Antigone, who refuses to follow the law of her uncle, King Creon, on behalf of her brother s burial. You must also understand the role of a woman during this time period to better understand this play. Men were superior to women. Women were considered as the property of their husbands. This meant women were expected to obey any and everything men said without questioning. This helps readers understand why Antigone is going against her uncle s law to not bury her brother, which resulted in such a punishment. Without this knowledge, the readers would not understand what caused all of the conflict that resulted in the play. To better understand Antigone, you must understand the symbols included in the play. Several very significant symbols are represented by Antigone and Creon.
